The Ghana Prisons Service has interdicted a prison officer following his arrest for allegedly attempting to smuggle a substance suspected to be Indian hemp into the Kete-Krachi Local Prison.
In a press release dated June 23, 2026, the Service identified the officer as No. 5866 Chief Officer Michael Osei-Bonsu.
According to the statement, the incident occurred on Friday, June 19, 2026, during routine security checks conducted before the officer reported for his night shift. The suspected narcotic substance was detected and retrieved at the prison gate through the vigilance of officers on duty.
The Ghana Prisons Service said the officer was immediately handed over to the Kete-Krachi District Police for further investigations. He was subsequently arraigned before the Kete-Krachi District Magistrate Court and remanded into custody for two weeks. The case has been adjourned to July 8, 2026.
The Service further announced that Chief Officer Osei-Bonsu has been interdicted in accordance with its regulations pending the outcome of both the criminal proceedings and internal disciplinary processes.
Reaffirming its commitment to integrity and security, the Ghana Prisons Service said it maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards drug-related offences and other forms of contraband, including mobile phones, in all prison facilities.
The Service also commended the officers whose vigilance led to the detection of the suspected contraband and reiterated its determination to prevent the introduction of prohibited items into prisons across the country.
