ECOWAS Court dismisses Ex-Chief Justice Torkornoo’s seven claims against Ghana

The Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Justice Srem-Sai, has announced that the ECOWAS Community Court has dismissed all seven claims brought against the Republic of Ghana by former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

In a post on X, Justice Srem-Sai disclosed that the regional court ruled in Ghana’s favour on all the claims presented by the former Chief Justice.

He further noted that the court declined to award the US$10 million in damages sought by Justice Torkornoo. According to him, the court held that, having found that Ghana did not violate any of the applicant’s rights under the African Charter as alleged, there was no basis to consider reparations.

“The ECOWAS Community Court has, a while ago, dismissed all of the seven claims which the former Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, brought against our beloved Republic,” Justice Srem-Sai wrote.

He also commended the team of State Attorneys who represented Ghana in the matter, praising their extensive research and dedication in mounting the Republic’s defence.

The full judgment of the ECOWAS Community Court is yet to be released.
