The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has issued a severe weather warning for the northern sector of the country as a moderate to heavy rainstorm sweeps across the region, bringing with it the threat of thunderstorms, gusty winds, and flash flooding.
According to the alert issued on Saturday, June 20, the rainstorm, which was captured in the afternoon forecast, has already moved into the country, inducing cloudiness over the Upper East, North East, and Northern regions.
The storm is expected to produce thunderstorms and rain of varying intensities as it continues its westward trajectory, with forecasts indicating it will affect the Savannah, parts of Bono East, Oti, and Upper West regions later in the day.
The agency has classified the severity of the weather event as “severe,” with an urgency rating of “immediate,” and has warned that strong to moderate winds may accompany the movement of the thunderstorms.
Residents in the affected areas have been urged to take necessary precautions, with particular attention to those in low-lying areas who are at heightened risk of flash floods.
In its advisory, GMet cautioned motorists and pedestrians to avoid moving through flood waters and advised the public to refrain from taking shelter under weak structures. “Stay indoors if you don’t need to go outside,” the agency urged, while also advising motorists to drive within required speed limits due to poor visibility.
The warning remains in effect until 5:30 pm on Saturday, with the storm expected to impact the Upper East, North East, Northern, Savannah, and Upper West regions.
The Ghana Meteorological Agency’s Central Analysis and Forecasting Office has assured the public that it is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as necessary.
