Ghana Won The U17 World Cup In 1995 With Overaged Players – Frimpong Manso

Former Ghanaian national and Kotoko player Frimpong Manso has disclosed that, the Black Starlet team of 1995 were able to win the world U17 tournament in Ecuador because they used overaged players to the detriment of the other countries to compete in the tournament.

Ghana defeated Brazil in the final to win their second World Cup trophy at that level.

The Asante Kotoko legend made this claim when speaking on the 25th anniversary of Ghana’s U-17 World Cup heroics in Equador 1995.

Frimpong Manso shockingly revealed that Ghana dominated at the youth level due to age cheating.

“I don’t have to tell you that we used overaged players to win tournaments in the olden days, you should know it yourself”

Frimpong Manso

“Back then there was no MRI scan to check the real age of the players so we used over-aged players and we suffered in the long run”

“This time around there is an MRI test to confirm whether the player is eligible to play or not”, he added.

Ghana first won the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 1991, but they lost the title against Nigeria in 1993 and won it back in 1995 to win their second trophy.
