learning that the recent arrest of Asante Akyem North Member of Parliament, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, in the Netherlands is not the only time he has had a brush with the law.

Recent news of his arrest in the European country is actually the second time in a year that the Parliamentarian has faced such situation in a foreign land.

His first arrest since he became a Member of Parliament, is said to have happened in the United Kingdom sometime in August 2025.

According to reports, the 38-year-old Ghanaian MP representing the Asante-Akyem North constituency of Ashanti Region, was first arrested in Manchester on August 18, 2025, following an alleged domestic assault.

Denial of arrest

However, the MP went on a live session on Facebook to dismiss the reports clarifying that “I am abroad representing my constituents and attracting investors to our area.”

“I am very much alive because of the support of the children and people I have helped as an MP. They spiritually intervene on my behalf,” he explained.

During the live session, the MP played a voice note of a woman celebrating news of his alleged arrest in Canada. “This is exactly what I am talking about – false narratives trying to tarnish my image,” he remarked.

Arrest, detention in Amsterdam

On Tuesday, May 12, 2026, news trickled in that the MP had been arrested again and this time had been detained at the Schipol Airport, Amsterdam.

There are no official details on why the legislator has been detained in Tue country, however, an earlier report by GhanaWeb said sources within Ghana’s law enforcement agencies had linked Frimpong’s arrest to an investigation in connection with the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

“According to sources familiar with the matter, the MP is being investigated for alleged financial crimes, including money laundering and suspected ‘romance scams’ involving an estimated US$32 million.

“A source also told GhanaWeb that the investigation into the allegations has spanned more than a year,” the report indicated.

Parliament confirmation

Parliament of Ghana has confirmed the arrest of Ohene Kwame Frimpong, the Member of Parliament for the Asante Akyem North Constituency in the Ashanti Region.

A statement issued by the Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, which was shared on the official social media handles of the House, indicated that the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has been informed of the matter.

It indicated that the leadership of the House is working with Ghana’s Mission in the Netherlands on the matter.
