Residents of Aworowa in the Techiman South Municipality of the Bono East Region have been left in shock after a 42-year-old cocoa farmer allegedly attempted suicide by slashing off his manhood with a sharp object.

The victim, identified as Kofi Assum, a cocoa farmer and basket weaver, was found lying in a pool of blood. Neighbours who rushed to the scene rescued him and sent him to the Holy Family Hospital in Techiman for treatment.

He was later referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi due to the severity of his condition.

During a visit to the family house, the Ghana News Agency (GNA) gathered that the incident occurred on Friday, April 17, 2026, at about 0600 hours.

Madam Grace Adwoa Agyeiwaa, mother of the victim, told the GNA that her son had complained of hearing voices persistently instructing him to harm himself and end his life.

A close friend of the victim, Mr Collins Akumfi Ameyaw, described the incident as shocking, noting that Mr Assum had not previously exhibited any signs of mental health challenges.

Health workers at the Holy Family Hospital told the GNA that the victim was in critical condition at the time of admission, necessitating his referral to KATH for specialised care.

The incident has since become the main topic of discussion in the community, with some new media handlers and social media influencers circulating videos related to the incident on various platforms.
