GCAA confirms microlight crash in Tema

Residents of Tema Community One were thrown into panic on Monday afternoon after a Sky Arrow microlight helicopter crashed into a school compound at Site 18, leaving two people feared dead.

The incident, which occurred around 3:30 p.m., disrupted normal activity in the busy residential enclave as the aircraft reportedly descended abruptly before crashing into a school park. Eyewitnesses described scenes of confusion and alarm as students and residents rushed to safety.

Plan B FM’s Abusuapanyin Mireku, who recounted the incident , indicated that the sudden nature of the crash left little time for anyone in the vicinity to react, intensifying the shock among onlookers.

Initial information suggests that the victims are believed to be the pilots on board the aircraft. Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service responded swiftly, securing the area and commencing rescue and recovery efforts. A senior officer confirmed that two bodies had been retrieved from the wreckage, deepening fears of fatalities.

As a precautionary measure, all teachers and pupils were evacuated from the premises while emergency teams worked to contain the situation. The crash site has since been cordoned off as investigators begin the process of determining the cause of the crash.

Authorities are yet to officially identify the victims, with further updates expected as investigations progress.
