Ghana issues travel advisory for citizens in Mexico amid Security Unrest

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a travel advisory urging Ghanaians in Mexico to exercise extreme caution following escalating security concerns in parts of the country.

The advisory comes in the wake of an operation by Mexican security forces on February 22, 2026, which reportedly resulted in the death of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho,” leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. The operation has since triggered coordinated retaliatory attacks across several states in Mexico.

According to the Ministry, the unrest has affected cities in Jalisco, Baja California, Colima, Guanajuato, Michoacán and Oaxaca. Reports indicate incidents of armed clashes, arson attacks on vehicles and road blockages, leading to casualties and significant disruptions to daily life.

The Government of Ghana has therefore advised Ghanaian nationals travelling to or residing in any of the affected areas to limit their movements and refrain from non-essential travel.

Ghanaians within the jurisdiction have also been encouraged to maintain contact with the Embassy of Ghana in Washington, D.C., which is concurrently accredited to Mexico, for consular assistance if necessary. The Embassy can be reached on +1 (202) 709 0568.

The Government further conveyed its solidarity with the Government of the United Mexican States and expressed confidence in the ability of Mexican authorities to restore calm.

The Ministry called on all media houses to take note of the advisory.
