A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications team in the Tema West Constituency, Richard Anning, has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of deceiving Ghanaians to win political power.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s current affairs programme Nkosuo Nsem, Mr Anning said the reality of governance under the NDC is now becoming clear following the introduction of the Value Added Tax Act, 2025 (Act 1151), which has increased the effective VAT charge on spare parts from four percent to 20 percent.
According to him, the sharp increase in taxes contradicts the promises the NDC made while in opposition and exposes what he described as deliberate misinformation used to sway voters during the electioneering period.
“The NDC painted the previous NPP administration black just to win power, but now they are doing worse,” he stated. “They lied their way into government, and today the truth is staring Ghanaians in the face.”
Mr Anning argued that the new VAT regime will worsen the cost of living, particularly for drivers, artisans and small business owners who rely heavily on spare parts for their livelihoods.
He further accused the government of betraying public trust, insisting that the NDC’s actions show a clear gap between campaign rhetoric and actual policy implementation.
“The reality is setting in, and Ghanaians are beginning to see that the promises made were only meant to win votes,” he added.
The government has defended the VAT Act, 2025, stating that the tax adjustment is part of broader efforts to expand the tax base and stabilize the economy.
