The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has commenced investigations into alleged electoral corruption during recent political party primaries organised by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a public notice dated 8 February 2026, the OSP announced that it has opened an investigation into the NPP’s presidential primaries conducted on 31 January 2026, focusing on allegations of vote buying, vote selling, and the sources of funding for the alleged corrupt practices.
The OSP further disclosed that on 7 February 2026, it began a real-time investigation into the NDC’s parliamentary primaries held in the Ayawaso East Constituency. The probe similarly centres on alleged vote buying and vote selling during the exercise.
According to the OSP, events during the Ayawaso East primaries escalated when one of the parliamentary aspirants, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, allegedly abetted individuals described as thugs to physically attack an officer of the OSP. The officer was reportedly carrying out an investigative directive in relation to allegations of vote buying and vote selling involving the candidate.
As a result of the incident, the OSP says it has opened an additional investigation into the alleged assault of its authorised officer, who was performing official duties at the time.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor has reiterated that Ghanaian law strictly prohibits corrupt practices in public elections. It warned that vote buying, vote selling, intimidation, threats of violence, and acts of violence constitute serious criminal offences and will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
The OSP has urged the public and political actors to cooperate with ongoing investigations as it works to safeguard the integrity of the country’s electoral processes.
