Fire injures mother and three children at naval barracks in Tema

Fire Destroys About 10 Shops At Tamale Aboabo Market

A tragic fire outbreak at the Naval Barracks in Tema has left a mother and her three children with severe injuries, sending shockwaves through the community and raising urgent questions about safety measures in military residential facilities.

According to eyewitnesses, the blaze erupted late in the evening when most residents were indoors. Thick smoke quickly engulfed the residential block, trapping families inside. Neighbours rushed to the scene, desperately trying to rescue those affected before the flames spread further. Despite their efforts, a mother and her three young children sustained serious burns and smoke inhalation injuries. They were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.

The incident drew swift attention from both military personnel and emergency services. Firefighters battled the inferno for hours before bringing it under control, preventing the flames from spreading to adjacent buildings. Residents described the scene as chaotic, with families fleeing in panic and others risking their lives to save neighbours.

One eyewitness recounted: “We heard screams and saw smoke pouring out of the windows. Everyone rushed to help, but the fire was too strong. It was heartbreaking to see the children being carried out unconscious.”

While investigations are ongoing, preliminary reports suggest the fire may have been triggered by an electrical fault. Residents have long complained about outdated wiring and poor maintenance in some of the barracks’ housing units. This incident has reignited calls for urgent renovations and stricter safety protocols to protect families living in military quarters.

The Tema Naval Barracks is home to dozens of service members and their families, making safety a top priority. This fire highlights the vulnerability of residents in such facilities, where infrastructure challenges can have devastating consequences. Advocacy groups are urging the Ghana Armed Forces and government agencies to prioritize fire safety, including:

– Regular inspection of electrical systems

– Installation of smoke detectors and fire alarms

– Fire safety drills for residents

– Improved emergency response infrastructure

As the injured mother and her children fight for recovery, the incident serves as a painful reminder of the importance of proactive safety measures. Military families sacrifice much in service to the nation, and ensuring their well-being at home should be non-negotiable.

The Tema community has rallied around the victims, offering support and prayers. Yet, beyond sympathy, there is a pressing need for accountability and reform. The fire at the Naval Barracks is not just an isolated tragedy—it is a wake-up call for authorities to act decisively before another disaster strikes.
