The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced its decision to present Baba Ali as its candidate for the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election.
Confirming the decision on Citi Eyewitness News on Monday January 26, the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the party, Divine Agorhom, said the choice was based on experience, humility, and the ability to mobilise support within a short period.
According to him, the party was deliberate in selecting a candidate who understands its internal structures and can work closely with party members at all levels.
“We want somebody who has the party experience, who will work within the party, somebody who is known within the party and somebody who has the humility and the ability to knock doors, go to everybody and work such that we will be able to help him within this small period of time and get the constituency to accept him,” he said.
Mr Agorhom explained that after consultations, the party leadership was convinced that Baba Ali met all the criteria.
“The gentleman we settled on appears to have ticked all these boxes, and for that, we think that we are good to go. We have decided to settle on the constituency secretary in the person of Baba Ali,” he added.
He noted that Baba Ali has served as constituency secretary on two occasions and enjoys the confidence of the entire constituency leadership.
“He’s been our constituency secretary twice, and the entire constituency leadership has agreed that we should go with him,” Mr Agorhom said.
Meanwhile, six aspirants have picked nomination forms to contest the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary in Ayawaso East ahead of the March 3 by-election.
They include the party’s constituency chairman, Mohammed Ramme; Hajia Amina Adam, wife of the late Member of Parliament; Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal; and Dr Yakubu Azindow.
