A nurse at the Tema Urban Hospital, Sandra Smith, has urged the public to take HIV prevention seriously.

Speaking on the Nyansapo Fie show on 1st December, 2025 on Plan B 104.5 FM, she explained that HIV can be contracted through unprotected sex with an infected partner, the use of contaminated sharp objects such as blades or needles, or from a pregnant woman living with HIV who is not on medication, which can lead to mother-to-child transmission.

Sandra noted that the early stage of HIV shows no visible signs, but as the virus progresses, some symptoms may appear. These include weight loss, fever, rashes, boils, muscle aches and sores in the mouth.

On prevention, she stressed that consistent condom use can significantly reduce the risk of HIV infection. She added that there are also daily preventive medications available for people who want extra protection.

She concluded by advising the public especially men, to be cautious in their sexual decisions, warning that engaging in sexual activity with someone who quickly agrees without hesitation should raise concerns.
