Public outcry grows as Ghana records its poorest mathematics results in seven years

Female Candidates Dominate WASSCE

The 2025 WASSCE results have triggered widespread shock and debate across Ghana as over 220,008 candidates—more than half of all test-takers—failed Core Mathematics, marking the worst performance in seven years. The announcement has flooded social media with reactions ranging from disbelief to humor, as citizens grapple with the implications of this educational crisis.

Many Ghanaians are questioning the sudden decline after eight years of relatively better performance. One prevailing sentiment suggests that a significant change in standards or governance may have exposed longstanding weaknesses in the educational system that were previously overlooked. Citizens are pondering what truly changed to cause such a dramatic shift in results.

The failure rate has sparked humorous yet pointed commentary about accountability. Some citizens jest about role reversals, asking who is now “riding” whom—a reference to the power dynamics between students and the educational system. Others have adopted a more cynical tone, insisting there should be no manipulation of results and that the authentic outcomes must stand, regardless of how uncomfortable they may be.

A significant observation emerging from public discourse is the distinction between simply passing examinations and genuinely mastering mathematical concepts through dedicated study. Many commenters emphasize that this moment represents the first real test of the current system in eight years, suggesting previous results may have masked the true state of mathematics education.

Personal stories have also emerged, with relatives sharing anecdotes of students achieving C4 grades and being encouraged to celebrate even modest success—a stark reminder of how low expectations have become. Some entrepreneurs have humorously offered their services as mathematics tutors for remedial classes, highlighting the urgent need for intervention.

The overwhelming consensus is clear: Ghanaians demand transparency, accountability, and genuine reform rather than cosmetic solutions to this educational emergency.
