One Beheaded, Houses Torched In Ahanta West Chieftaincy Clash

A violent chieftaincy clash between the communities of Asemko and Butre in the Ahanta West Municipality of the Western Region has left one person beheaded and about 80 per cent of houses in Asemko burnt.

The violence is reported to have erupted from a long-standing dispute over traditional leadership, which reignited after residents of Asemko attempted to install their own chief.

The move was said to have been resisted by some members of the neighbouring Butre community, leading to fierce confrontations.
According to a myjoyonline.com report on October 8, 2025, the situation quickly escalated into chaos, with armed groups from both sides engaging in attacks that left several properties destroyed.

The incident has created widespread fear among residents, many of whom have fled the towns for safety.

“At the moment, Asemko has been deserted, with displaced residents seeking refuge in nearby communities. Schools have been closed, and economic and social activities in the area have come to a standstill as the situation remains tense,” the report said.

Local authorities and security personnel have since moved into the area to assess the situation and prevent further violence.
However, calm is yet to be fully restored as investigations continue into the cause of the conflict and those responsible for the brutal killing.
