The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has issued a warning, urging the public to ensure that emergency exits open outwards to facilitate safe escape during emergencies, particularly in the event of fire outbreaks. According to Divisional Officer Grade II Ebenezer Kwasi Yenzu, Public Relations Officer for the Tema Regional GNFS, this simple measure can significantly reduce risks and save lives.
In an interview with Nana Asabea on Plan B FM’s social and lifestyle show, he emphasised that functional emergency exits opening in the direction of travel can enable swift evacuations and minimise congestion. He added that proper design and maintenance of emergency exits are crucial in preventing accidents and reducing damage during fires.
Although the Service is working to educate the public on fire safety and prevention measures, including the importance of adhering to building codes and regulations, DOII Yenzu reiterated the importance of regularly checking that emergency exits are accessible, functional, and open in the direction of travel.
He concluded by calling on the public to work together to reduce the risks associated with fires and other emergencies.
