Police in the Savannah Region on Sunday night arrested three suspected highway robbers who attempted to rob passengers on board a bus at Nyanguripe, near Fufulso on the Buipe-Tamale highway.
The suspects, Bukari Dilemma, Yakubu Sanjo and Dauda Musah, said to be part of a gang of highway robbers stopped the bus and ordered the passengers to lie-down on the road.
Upon seeing the police approaching the spot they fled into the bush.
But the police in collaboration with some youth at Fufulso in the Central Gonja District traced and arrested the three suspects in the bush.
The police also retrieved from the scene one spent and one live BB cartridges used by the robbers as well as an unregistered motorbike used by the robbers for the operation.
The Savannah Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Mr Enoch Adutwum Bediako told Graphic Online that on August 9, 2020 at about 9pm the Police at the Fufulso barrier had information that armed men had attacked communities at Nyanguripe near Fufulso on the Buipe-Tamale highway.
He said personnel on duty at the Fufulso barrier rushed to the scene and met the commuters on board a bus who had been forced to lie-down on the road by the armed robbers.
DCOP, Mr Bediako said on seeing the police approaching the robbers fled into the bush but on the same night around 9.45pm the police in collaboration with some youth of Fufulso traced and arrested Bukari Dilemma, Yakubu Sanjo and Dauda Musah.
In a related development, the police in the Savannah region on the same day, August 9, 2020 at about 4pm foiled another armed robbery attempt on passengers on board another bus at Mile 40 near Fufulso on the Buipe – Tamale highway.
DCOP Mr Bediako said the robbers fled into the bush when the police approached them.
He said they fired at the police as they fled, adding that the police also returned fire but the robbers who were armed with AK 47 assault rifles managed to escape.
