Minority stages walkout ahead of 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review presentation

The Minority Members of Parliament on Thursday staged a dramatic walkout from Parliament in protest against what they describe as the worsening crisis of electoral violence threatening Ghana’s democracy.

The walkout, which occurred during parliamentary proceedings, was a symbolic move to draw national attention to what the Minority calls the government’s failure to curb violence associated with elections.

According to the Minority, recent incidents of electoral brutality, intimidation, and impunity have eroded public trust in democratic processes and posed a grave threat to peace and stability in the country.

“This protest is a call to conscience. We cannot sit idly by while the democratic rights of Ghanaians are trampled by a rising tide of politically-motivated violence,” a leading Minority MP told journalists after the walkout.

The MPs are demanding concrete action from the government, the Electoral Commission, and security agencies to ensure free, fair, and violence-free elections in the lead-up to the 2024 general polls.

They have also called for investigations into past electoral incidents, including those that resulted in deaths and injuries, urging justice and accountability for victims.
