Tensions escalated at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra on Tuesday, May 27, after the arrest of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as “Chairman Wontumi.”
In a brief address to journalists and a crowd of agitated New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters gathered at the EOCO premises, Wontumi’s lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, revealed that his client had been taken to the hospital shortly after his arrest.
While the specific health concerns were not disclosed, the lawyer confirmed that medical attention was necessary.
Appiah-Kubi further disclosed that while they were at the EOCO offices, they were served with a writ of summons from EXIM Bank.
However, he did not delve into the contents of the summons, saying the details were yet to be made public.
Wontumi had earlier reported to the CID headquarters in Accra for further interrogation over allegations of illegal mining and unauthorized entry into forest reserves, in compliance with his bail conditions.
It was after this engagement that EOCO operatives intercepted and detained him.
EOCO has yet to issue an official statement regarding the arrest or the involvement of EXIM Bank.
