Twum Ampofo, Rent Officer, Ghana, has blamed the recent rent hikes on the government’s housing policy failure.
In an interview with Odiamono Kwaku Gyimah on Plan B FM’s Nkɔsoɔnsɛm show, he cites the Rent Control Act, 1986 (PNDCL 138), and the Rent Act, 1963 (Act 220), which limit rent advances to three months for non-commercial purposes.
Despite these laws, many landlords disregard them, driving up rent prices.
Ampofo urges the government to revisit and strengthen housing policies, stating: “Government after government has come and gone, but their refusal to act on this policy has resulted in mounting pressure on private housing, leading to skyrocketing rent prices.”
However, Richard Yaw Aning, NPP Communicator for Tema Central Constituency, criticises Rent Control for underperformance, alleging they “do virtually nothing” and lack data on available houses.
In contrast, Anthony Sam-Anoom, Assemblyman and NDC Communication Team Member, advocates for enforcing existing laws to relieve tenants, questioning the sale of lands in Tema, which was originally established for workers.
