Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s 2024 Presidential Candidate and former Vice President, has announced plans to amend the party’s constitution ahead of the 2028 elections.
A key reform he highlighted is the expansion of the party’s delegate system, which will enable a larger number of party members to participate in electing the Presidential Candidate and other officers.
During a speech to party supporters at the NPP Headquarters on April 23, 2025, Dr. Bawumia emphasized that this expansion is crucial for fostering broader participation within the party.
He stated, “You can expect without any doubt that the delegate system is going to change. We will change the current system and allow more people to vote. That will give the right to more people to come in and be part of the electoral college.”
Dr. Bawumia also addressed the 2024 election loss, attributing it in part to 2.1 million supporters of the NPP who failed to cast their votes.
He expressed that this internal disengagement played a significant role in the defeat, stressing, “If we decide to vote, we will win.”
