The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has acknowledged the current water shortages affecting parts of the country, particularly in the Volta Region, explaining that rationing is the only way to manage the crisis.
“We are unable to supply water to meet the full demand of the population, and the only way to manage this is through rationing,” said Stanley Martey, Director of Communications at GWCL. He noted that some areas might receive more water than others based on their proximity to supply sources.
Despite the challenges, Martey assured the public that authorities are working towards a long-term solution. “The whole expansion project is a priority, and even His Excellency the President is very much aware and wants it done,” he stated.
To help residents cope, he encouraged proper water storage, emphasizing that “every area receives water at least four days a week, so if people store water, they can manage when there is no flow.”
He urged Ghanaians to support each other in managing the situation, acknowledging that rapid population growth has outpaced water infrastructure development.
