President Mahama in consultation with Bagbin on renewal of anti-LGBTQ+ bill

President Mahama in consultation with Bagbin on renewal of anti-LGBTQ+ bill

President John Dramani Mahama has stated that he is in discussions with the Speaker of Parliament to renew the expired anti-LGBTQ+ bill, which will be reintroduced by the government.

Addressing a gathering of clergymen and government officials during his fellowship with men of God on Friday, February 28, 2025, the president reiterated his support for the bill’s implementation.

Acknowledging the need to uphold Christian values and principles regarding the existence of only two genders, President Mahama said that it is only fitting for the government to sponsor the bill, rather than allowing it to be championed as a Private Members’ bill.

He emphasised the importance of teaching family values in schools through early education, rather than solely relying on legislation to address the issue.

“As a Christian, I uphold the principles and values that only two genders exist, man and woman and that marriage is between a man and woman. I have spoken with the Speaker so that a renewal of the expired Proper Family Values bill should be a bill that is introduced by the government, rather than as a Private Member’s motion and it is my hope that the consultation will see a renewed bill,” he said.

His latest statement reaffirms his previous conviction that the bill should be government-sponsored.

During a meeting with a delegation of Catholic bishops from the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference on January 14, 2025, the president argued that making the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, which seeks to criminalise homosexual practices and impose strict laws, a government-sponsored initiative would enable the integration of the country’s cultural values into various curricula taught to students.

He explained that this approach would remove the need for a separate bill aimed at enforcing family values in the country to be legislated.
