Sky Train Project: Joe Ghartey invited by NIB for questioning

Finance Minister’s update on Essipong Stadium inaccurate – Joe Ghartey

Former Minister of Railway Development, Joe Ghartey, has been invited by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) for questioning over the Ghana Sky Train project, according to a report by 3news.com.

The project was initiated in 2018 by the previous administration as a major infrastructure initiative to tackle traffic congestion, particularly in the Greater Accra Region.

Under the leadership of Joe Ghartey, Ghana signed a concession agreement with Africa Investment (Ai) Sky Train Consortium in 2019, with an estimated cost of $3 billion.

However, the project never took off, igniting concerns about its feasibility and financing.

In 2022, the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), a state entity, disclosed that it had invested $2 million in the project but had yet to see any returns.

The Auditor-General’s report also flagged this expenditure, sparking public conversation.

On Sunday, February 23, 2025, personnel from the NIB detained Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi at his residence on Sunday, as part of ongoing investigations into alleged financial impropriety at GIIF.

Although he was later released, his arrest ignited widespread debates, with many questioning the circumstances surrounding the project and the alleged misuse of funds.
