The Chief Executive Officer and Headmistress of Tema Parents’ Association School in the Tema Metropolis, Madam Docia Abakosoyo Addison, has appealed to the Government of Ghana to treat students in private schools equally as they do for students in public schools.
Speaking in an interview with Plan B FM’s press team on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, during the school’s inter-house sporting activities, Madam Docia expressed her concerns about the perceived disparity in treatment between private and public school students.
She stated that it is disheartening to see private school students being treated as though they are not Ghanaians.
“There are numerous doctors, teachers, nurses, and other professionals serving this country who passed through private schools,” she noted.
She emphasized that these professionals serve all Ghanaians equally, without discriminating based on whether someone attended a private or public school.
“As a nation benefiting from taxpayers’ money, we must remember that parents whose children attend private schools also pay taxes. Their children should therefore benefit from any education policy introduced by the government,” she stressed.
Madam Docia further appealed to the government to allocate a quota for graduates from private basic schools when placing students in Senior High Schools, just as is done for graduates from public schools.
“Private schools in Ghana are doing exceptionally well in equipping children with knowledge, skills, and values, just like public schools. So why is it that the quota system favors public school students while private school students are left out?” she questioned.
She concluded by urging the government to prioritize private schools in its education policies.
