Lady Marilyn Abeka-Daniels, an adjunct lecturer at the University of Media, Arts and Communication, Institute of Journalism (UNIMAC-IJ), recently appeared on Plan B FM’s popular social and lifestyle programme, Nyansapɔ Fie. During the interview, she emphasised the importance of tough love.
Speaking with hostess Nana Asabea, Lady Abeka-Daniels noted that love is often misunderstood as mere coddling and sentiment. However, she argued that true love sometimes requires toughness.
Using the biblical story of Job as an example, she illustrated how love can be complex. She explained that while God loved Job, He still allowed him to endure trials and tribulations, demonstrating that love is not always easy or comfortable.
“Love is complex, and we cannot assume how people should love us unless we communicate our needs to them,” she said, referencing Gary Chapman’s book The 5 Love Languages.
She further explained that some people may not express love verbally but instead demonstrate it through actions. For instance, a Korean mother who sacrificed her time to cook for her son while he was in medical school performed a powerful act of love.
Addressing common complaints among married couples, Lady Abeka-Daniels noted that many partners mistakenly believe they are unloved simply because their spouse does not express affection verbally. However, love may be conveyed in numerous other ways.
To bridge this gap, she urged individuals to understand both their own love language and that of their partners.
The interview, which aired on Monday, 10th February 2025, is available on Plan B FM’s website and social media channels.
