28-Year-old Abigail Agbubia, a resident of Manhean, Tema New Town, is currently languishing in police custody pending investigation after she was reported to have killed her two children over allege economic hardship.
Abigail is alleged have used rat poison in killing her 2-year-old son and his younger sister who is believed to be 8 months old.
A statement signed by Chief Inspector Dede Dzakpasu of the Public Affairs Unit of the Tema Regional Police Command, noted that on July 30, 2020 at about 5:30pm, the Tema Regional Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had information that two children were found dead at Manhean, a suburb of Tema New Town.
According to the statement, the Crime Scene team and investigators from the Tema Regional Police Command visited the scene where they found the motionless bodies of a boy and a girl in a wooden structure that serve as the abode of the 28-year-old suspect and her family.
The statement continued that on inspection, no marks of assault were found on any of the bodies of the children. Their mouths and nostrils, according to the statement, however, were foamy. The police reportedly did not waste time as they immediately conveyed the bodies of the children after investigating the scene and gathering relevant details, to the Police Morgue in Accra for autopsy and further investigation.
Abigail, according to the police was immediately arrested and sent away to be detained in police custody to assist with investigation into what might have led to the death of the 2-year-old and the 8-month-year-old respectively.
Concluding, the Tema Regional Police Command has appealed to members of the general public especially residents of Tema New Town, with any information on the death of the children to report same to the Tema Regional Crime Officer. It promised to ensure that the identity of such informant is kept away from the public.
A source in the area told Phil Mensah of Plan B News that Abigail had on many occasions complained of financial difficulties and threatened to end the lives of the children if she did not see a turn-around in her situation. She is said to have mentioned that the GH¢20 weekly up-keep money her husband gives her is inadequate and therefore could not cater for them.
According to the source, a lot of the residents admonished her to refrain from such remarks as it was not the best way out her predicament. It therefore came as a huge shock to them when it was confirmed that she has indeed killed her children citing financial difficulties as her reason for committing such crime.
