A growing concern is emerging as rising cases of helplessness lead to psychiatric hospitalisations. Lady Rev Charlotte Hanson, Head of Public Affairs Unit at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment, has raised concerns about this alarming trend.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s “Nyansapɔ Fie,” a social and lifestyle programme hosted by Nana Asabea, Lady Rev Hanson explained that intense grief, often triggered by uncontrollable events, can lead to emotional helplessness and, ultimately, psychiatric hospitalisation.
She cited biblical examples, including the woman who suffered from menstrual bleeding for several years and the man who suffered for 38 years, highlighting how chronic health conditions can contribute to feelings of helplessness.
Prophet Ebenezer, Head Pastor of the Army Of God Revival Centre, shared similar concerns, noting that helplessness can drive individuals to suicidal tendencies and criminal behaviour. He defined helplessness as “a psychological state characterised by feelings of powerlessness, hopelessness, and lack of control over one’s circumstances.”
Lady Marilyn Abeka-Daniels, an adjunct lecturer at the University of Media, Arts and Communication, Institute of Journalism, UNIMAC-IJ, offered additional insights. “As humans, we desire control over our lives, but when we’re faced with situations that leave us feeling powerless, we are plunged into emotional trauma and a sense of helplessness.”
She explained that helplessness can stem from various situations, including financial or occupational challenges, that can leave individuals feeling incomplete and resigned to their fate.
Referencing the Biblical account of the Garden of Eden, Lady Abeka-Daniels noted that humans were created to have dominion, but sin led to a loss of that power.
Despite this, she encouraged those struggling with helplessness not to give up. “We can’t control everything that happens in life, but we can cast our burdens onto God and trust in His power to overcome our personal struggles,” she said.
Both Lady Rev Hanson and Prophet Ebenezer emphasised the importance of support and prayer in rescuing individuals from the grip of helplessness. By acknowledging the emotional and psychological impact of helplessness, we can work towards providing effective support and guidance to those affected.
