Five individuals, including Nelson Mandela’s grandson, were detained following the discovery of a hijacked Uber vehicle at the iconic Houghton residence in Sandton on January 8, 2025.

Four of the suspects, excluding Mandela’s grandson, appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on January 10.

The grandson, whose identity is being withheld for verification, is caught in a case that has raised alarm about public safety and the status of the revered family home.

The hijacked vehicle was stolen in Benoni the previous evening, with the suspects reportedly holding the Uber driver captive.

Although the driver’s condition remains unclear, he is said to be preparing to file an official report.

The suspects face serious charges including robbery, kidnapping, and assault. The case has been adjourned until January 17 for further investigations and an identity parade.

While the suspects’ legal representative opposed the delay, arguing it violated their bail rights, the court ruled to postpone proceedings, with the prosecution opposing bail. If convicted, the suspects face lengthy prison sentences, ranging from 15 to 25 years.
