Tema Central Parliamentary Dispute: Allow the law to work if you respect it – NDC’s Dela Akpetor criticizes NPP

Tema Central Parliamentary Dispute: Allow the law to work if you respect it – NDC’s Dela Akpetor criticizes NPP

The Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the Tema West Constituency, Dela Akpetor, has criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Electoral Commission (EC), urging them to allow the rule of law to prevail if they truly respect it.

Following the December elections, disputes arose in several constituencies, including Tema Central. A court has since ordered the Electoral Commission (EC) to re-collate and declare the parliamentary results for the constituency.

However, the Electoral Commission, in collaboration with the New Patriotic Party, allegedly acted illegally by proceeding with the re-collation while the NDC had sought an injunction from the court.

Speaking during a panel discussion on Plan B FM’s Nkosuo Nsem show on Monday, January 6, 2024, hosted by Obidehyie Kofi Sekyi, Dela Akpetor accused both the EC and the NPP of disregarding Ghana’s electoral laws.

“Allow the law to function if you truly respect it,” he asserted.

According to him, “In parliamentary procedures, the declaration of results is done at the designated collation center for the election, and there is no other winner aside from Ebi Bright.”

He further claimed that the Tema Metro Director of the Electoral Commission would face legal consequences after the swearing-in process.

“Hon. Ebi Bright has already been registered as the MP-elect for Tema Central Constituency, and she will be in Parliament tonight,” he stated.

“Charles Forson should not bother going to Parliament because he will not be sworn in by the Speaker,” he added.

Dela Akpetor also alleged that two pink sheets were found in the house of the Tema Metro Director of the EC, an act that violates Ghana’s electoral laws.
