Ernest Owusu-Bempah, the Deputy National Communications Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed disappointment over his party’s crushing defeat in the December 7, 2024, general election as reported by Ghana Web on Monday, December 23, 2024.
The NPP lost the presidential race by over 1.5 million votes to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and also saw a significant reduction in its parliamentary seats, losing approximately 50 of its 137 seats.
In a revealing interview on Oyerepa TV with Kwesi Parker-Wilson, Owusu-Bempah attributed the NPP’s failure to a mix of voter apathy and internal challenges.
He criticized the party’s campaign team, claiming that many members were ill-suited for their roles. “Square pegs were put in round holes,” he said, revealing the misalignment of team members with the campaign’s needs.
According to Owusu-Bempah, the party’s focus on infrastructure like roads and bridges failed to resonate with voters, who needed a clearer, more compelling political agenda.
Additionally, Owusu-Bempah revealed that he was often sidelined, unable to fully contribute to the party’s efforts.
He stated that many of his initiatives were personal, not part of the party’s larger strategy, and lamented that his attempts to galvanize support were stifled.
“I was crippled not to work,” he added, revealing the frustration of being prevented from using his skills to help the party.
The interview also touched on the strained relations within the NPP, with Owusu-Bempah describing instances of key party figures not even answering calls to address internal concerns.
