I feel free again – Ophelia Mensah Hayford reflects on life after politics

Former Member of Parliament for Mfantseman, Madam Ophelia Mensah Hayford, has spoken candidly about life after her political career.

In a heartfelt interview on Coastal FM monitored by Plan B News, she shared her perspective on losing her seat in the 2024 elections and how the transition has impacted her personal life.

When asked how she was coping since her electoral defeat, Madam Ophelia’s response was surprisingly upbeat.

“Honestly, I feel free. It’s as though a heavy burden has been lifted off my shoulders,” she revealed. Her tone was not one of regret but rather a relief, as she described how the end of her parliamentary duties has afforded her a sense of liberation she had longed for.

For years, her life had been consumed by the demands of public service—endless meetings, constituents’ needs, and the relentless scrutiny of political life.

“When you’re in politics, every moment of your day is accounted for. There’s no time to just be yourself,” she explained. The pressure of being constantly available to her constituency left little room for personal growth or leisure.

Since leaving office, she has rediscovered simple joys that many take for granted. “Just recently, I got into my car and drove to a beautiful location for a quiet outing.

“It was something I hadn’t done in years because my schedule never allowed it,” she shared with a smile. “For the first time in ages, I came back home late in the evening, feeling refreshed. It was like I was reconnecting with myself.”

Madam Ophelia reflected on how the break from politics has allowed her to explore interests and focus on her well-being.

“I feel like I can finally be my authentic self again, without worrying about what anyone will say or how it will be perceived,” she noted, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to prioritize her personal life.

It is important to highlight that she lost the election to Prince Ebenezer Arhin of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), a first time in the race who garnered 35,832 votes compared to her 23,349 votes.
