Ghana National Fire Service warns against open burning

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has issued a warning to the public against open burning, especially during the dry season. Station Officer II Eshun Charles Audrew of the Tema Safety Department emphasized that open burning can lead to uncontrolled fires, damaging crops, properties, and posing health risks.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s social and lifestyle show, ‘Nyansapɔ Fie’, Officer Eshun advised the public to exercise caution when engaging in open burning. To prevent fire outbreaks, he recommends checking local regulations, obtaining necessary permits, and consulting the Fire Service before burning.

To ensure safety, Officer Eshun suggests considering the following precautions:

– Check Local Regulations: Verify local regulations and obtain necessary permits before engaging in open burning.

– Consult the Fire Service: Seek advice and risk assessment from the Fire Service.

– Choose a Safe Location: Select a safe, isolated area away from buildings and flammable materials.

– Avoid Windy Days: Refrain from burning on windy days to prevent the spread of fire.

– Supervise the Fire Process: Ensure an adult supervises the fire process.

ADO I Clara Otoo of the Tema Safety Department also emphasized the importance of safety precautions, particularly for parents and traders who use fire in their activities. She cautioned parents to ensure their children’s attire doesn’t catch fire easily and to teach them safety in gadget usage. Traders are also advised to quench charcoal in coal pots, ensure they’re cooled down before storage, and put out fires from cylinders before use.
