‘The Stick Used on Takyi is Reserved for Baah’ – Mahama Warns Future Appointees

Mahama cautioned against populism, pointing to the consequences of eliminating the betting tax, e-levy, and other measures

President-elect John Mahama has criticized the political class in Ghana for abusing the power entrusted to them by the people.

He emphasized that arrogance and self-interest have become prevalent among politicians, who often forget that the power they hold is only temporary and given by God, not inherently theirs.

Speaking at a thanksgiving service on December 15, 2024, Mahama reflected on Ghana’s democratic history since 1992, acknowledging that both he and other political elites have allowed their sense of power to overshadow their responsibility to the people.

Commenting on the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 elections, Mahama called it a wakeup call for all politicians, reminding them that the electorate can vote them out just as easily as they elect them.

He also warned his future appointees that if they fail to serve Ghanaians with humility and diligence, they risk facing the same fate as those who have been ousted from power. “The stick that was used to beat Takyi is the same one reserved for Baah,” Mahama cautioned, urging those seeking political positions to be prepared to serve the people faithfully or not come at all.
