Former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government of engaging in corruption and manipulating voters ahead of the December 2024 elections. His critique, shared in an opinion piece and reported by Modern Ghana on December 3, 2024, targeted President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Amidu alleged that the government views ordinary Ghanaians as easily influenced, describing their governance style as exploitative and condescending. “The corrupt and looting government machinery of Nana Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is so power-drunk that they only see the ordinary Ghanaian as a zombified idiot whose vote can be bought after dangling a few television pictures,” he wrote.
The former Attorney General also criticized the government’s recent inaugurations of development projects, labeling them as strategic attempts to sway voters. He described the timing of these events as an abuse of incumbency, designed to obscure the administration’s shortcomings in economic and social governance.
Amidu further argued that these inaugurations, concentrated in the final months leading to the elections, reflect a lack of respect for voters. “President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is so scared of a free and fair democratic contest… that he reserved most of the infrastructural developments undertaken under his tenure to be commissioned by his chosen successor and himself within the last three months to the 7 December 2024 elections,” he remarked.
The former Special Prosecutor accused the government of misusing public funds under the guise of development and labeled their actions as a “condescending insult to the electorate.”
Amidu’s statements have sparked widespread reactions. While critics of the government echo his concerns, supporters of the NPP argue that their track record in infrastructure development speaks for itself.
