Lt. Gen. Arnold Quainoo, a distinguished former commander of the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG), has passed away.

Popularly known as the “Buffalo Soldier,” the retired military officer reportedly died at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra, where he had been receiving treatment for a terminal illness.

Family sources confirmed his passing, describing it as a profound loss to the military and the nation.

Lt. Gen. Quainoo was a prominent figure in West African peacekeeping operations, with a career marked by valour and leadership.

His role as the first commander of the ECOMOG forces during the Liberian Civil War earned him widespread recognition for his efforts in restoring stability to the region.

Details regarding funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by his family and the Ghana Armed Forces in the coming days.

Lt. Gen. Quainoo’s legacy remains deeply etched in Ghana’s military history and West Africa’s peacekeeping efforts.
