GHA Workers’ strike halted by court order

The National Labour Commission (NLC) has secured an interim injunction against Ghana Highways Authority Senior Staff Association and the Ghana Highway Workers Union (CBMWU-TUC), to halt their industrial action declared on November 12, 2024.

The injunction order, issued by Justice Frank Aboadwe Rockson, is directed at the leadership of the association and its assigns, and is to last for 10 days.

They were further ordered to comply with the directives of the NLC dated November 6, 2024 and call off the industrial strike action.

The two groups announced a nationwide strike on November 12, 2024, to protest against the implementation of the National Roads Authority Act, 2024 (Act 1118).

They opposed the new legislation and argued that it would merge the Ghana Highways Authority (GHA) with the Department of Urban Roads and the Department of Feeder Roads, thereby undermining the Authority’s independence and lead to increased bureaucratic inefficiency.

They made several demands, including halting the implementation of the Act and revoking appointments made under it, which they argue violated the 1992 Constitution.

The association indicated in a statement that “These appointments are void, as they contravene Article 195 of the 1992 Constitution.”
