The Black Satellites of Ghana were held to a draw in their opening game of the 2024 WAFU B Cup of Nations Championship.
Forward Jerry Afriyie scored twice as Desmond Ofei’s side salvaged a 2-2 stalemate against Benin in Lome.
Afriyie opened the scoring for Ghana after 14 minutes, dribbling past his marker and the goalkeeper before slotting the ball into an empty net.
However, the Satellites were pegged back in the 26th minute when Ghana’s goalkeeper failed to save a diving header from a Benin player.
Benin turned the game around five minutes before the break as the goalkeeper was beaten from long range.
Benin went into the break with a 2-1 lead, but Ofei’s side was not entirely out of the game.
Ghana came back from the break and created several threats.
Their chase for an equaliser, however, was unsuccessful in the early stages of the second half.
In added time, the Satellites were awarded a penalty for a foul in the Benin box.
Afriyie, brimming with confidence after scoring the first goal, stepped up to convert the resulting penalty and secure a point for Ghana.
The result on the opening day means none of the teams in Group A picked up three points, as hosts Togo and Niger also played out a 2-2 draw earlier in the day.
Ghana’s next game is against Niger on Sunday, October 20.
