Former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu has asked Parliament to take illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, more seriously.

The lawmaker, in his request, asked for the National Security, Lands and Natural Resources, and Interior Ministers to appear before the House and account for their stewardship in the fight against galamsey.

Haruna Iddrisu stated the ministers and all other heads of state agencies must account for the amount of money invested in the fight against illegal mining.

The Tamale South MP indicated that Ghanaians expect parliament to take action and hold persons in whom we have entrusted the supervision of our natural resources accountable.

He said, ‘’Mr. Speaker, it would be my request that we take up this matter much seriously and invite the three ministers of state, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, the Minister for National Security, the Minister for Interior, and all other institutions involved, and the Minister of Environment, to publicly account to Ghanaians through you how much has so far been spent in the name of fighting illegal mining and galamsey and how much destruction in terms of an of an official report to our water bodies. Mr. Speaker, you can give consequential directions. The people of Ghana expect that from us as parliament, that we hold persons in whom we have entrusted the supervision of our national resources accountable’’.
