Mrs. Bernice Asante, a medical practitioner at the Tema Urban Hospital, has asked the general public to join the fight for responsible antibiotic use as inaction on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) can be deadly.
In an interview with Nana Asabea on Plan FM’s Nyansapɔ Fie show, Mrs. Asante said the consequences of inaction on AMR are dire. “Losing a life to a drug-resistant infection would be a heartbreaking failure, and therefore, there is a need for all to be part of the fight,” she added.
She emphasized that AMR also affects animals, highlighting the need for animal farmers to consult Veterinary Officers for proper care. Additionally, she urged crop farmers to avoid using harmful chemicals, as the food chain can ultimately impact human health.
By taking simple steps, individuals can play a crucial role in preventing the spread of AMR and protecting their own health. These steps include:
– Avoiding self-medication
– Adopting a healthy lifestyle
– Washing hands thoroughly after using the toilet
– Properly washing fruits and vegetables
In conclusion, she urged all to be responsible in antibiotic use as it is crucial in the fight against AMR. ”Join the fight today!,” she stressed.
