In a bold move, two major unions, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), have joined forces with other labor unions to protest the devastating effects of illegal mining in Ghana.

They urge the government to take drastic measures and ban all forms of mining to safeguard the nation’s environment.

According to Angel Carbonu, National President of NAGRAT, this united front aims to protect Ghana’s fragile ecosystem, which is facing unprecedented threats from illegal mining activities.

He noted that the  alarming rate at which some illegal miners are destroying water bodies necessitates immediate action.

Speaking  OTEC News Reporter Kwame Agyenim on October 2, 2024 Angel Carbonu said they will not rest until government stop mining

Abass Imoro, Public Relations Officer for GPRTU, echoed Carbonu’s sentiments, highlighting the dire consequences of inaction.

He added that Illegal mining has deadly repercussions, and cautioned that, the unions cannot afford to wait any longer for the government to act.
