Ex-Black Stars player Stephen Appiah has charged Black Stars players to show massive committed when representing the national team.
Concerns have been raised by many Ghanaians following the underwhelming performances of national teams with the Black Stars taking center stage in the complaints. These concerns were reactivated when Ghana failed to record win in their first two games of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Angola and Niger.
“Players who come to the national team have to be committed. I am not seeing that. They have to be committed because out of a population of 30 something million, you are part of a select 23. It is an honour. You are representing Ghana and you must make it worth the while,” he said.
Stephen Appiah spoke before the Parliamentary select committee for sports on Tuesday, as they hope to address the issue of underperforming across various sporting disciplines in the country.
“For the past five years we are struggling, we are not seeing things like that (commitment). You can be a good captain, it doesn’t mean you can win games. When you and your colleagues have the same goal, that is when you win,” he added.
Ghana, who have recently dropped six places in September’s FIFA rankings to 70th, face Kwesi Appiah’s Sudan in October, with the venue yet to be confirmed after CAF revoked its approval of Ghana’s Baba Yara Stadium.
