Security and governance expert Dr. David Agbee, has expressed his apprehensions at the overall shape of Ghana’s security as the 2020 general election beckons.
He made his reservations known while speaking on Plan B FM’s morning show; Nkɔsoɔ Nsɛm with host, Maxwell Ohene Addo on Wednesday 22nd July.
Dr. Agbee asserted that, public confidence in the nation’s security set-up is declining because the apparatus is being overridden by the whims of certain individuals and groups whose regard for the rule of law is questionable. He established that, disdain for the laid-down security structures in confronting disputes was tantamount to defiance of the 1992 constitution of the Republic.
The security expert emphasized the need to address Ghana’s security loopholes by solidly protecting the integrity of the police force, especially, the office of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) while ensuring that the national security recruitment process is not compromised through corruption.
On his take on the recent gun-toting incident at the Ewutu-Senya constituency, Dr. Agbee slammed the use of firearms in public while admonishing gun owners to exercise due restraint against all odds. He fumed; “it does not sit right with me, that a political figure of that stature would discharge a firearm in a place loaded with people without considering the possible consequences of her action”. He also urged the Ghana Small Arms Commission, to take a firmer look at gun ownership in the country in order to prevent unsavoury eventualities in the future.
