Tension rising in Okaikwei North as NPP’s Nana Ama Dokua’s eligibility is challenged

Tension rising in Okaikwei North as NPP’s Nana Ama Dokua’s eligibility is challenged

The eligibility of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Okaikwei North constituency, Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei who also serves as the sitting Member of Parliament (MP) for Akuapem North, has come under scrutiny.

A petition challenging her right to vote in Okaikwei North has been filed by one Kingsley Anyamasah, and submitted to the Electoral Commission (EC).

The objection, filed using the EC’s official form, claims that the parliamentary candidate is neither a resident nor an ordinary resident of the electoral area.

Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei, the Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry and current MP for Akuapem North, has opted not to seek re-election in her home constituency. Instead, she is aiming for the Okaikwei North seat.

This unexpected decision has been linked to various factors, including alleged discord with members of her party in Akuapem North, potentially paving the way for Sammy Awuku, the Director-General of the National Lotteries Authority (NLA), to contest for the seat.

A native of Akropong in the Akuapem North constituency of Ghana’s Eastern Region, Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei is currently serving her second term as an MP.

In a surprising turn of events, she won the Okaikwei North NPP parliamentary primary on 2 December, defeating opponents such as the former Deputy Chief Executive of MASLOC, Alberta Afia Akoto, and the former MP for the constituency, Fuseini Issa.

Meanwhile, the Okaikwei North seat, traditionally an NPP stronghold, witnessed an unexpected shift in 2020 when Theresa Awuni of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) emerged victorious.

Below is the petition:
