“Involve Us From The Start” – Rent Administrator Urges Landlords

Rent manager for Tema municipality, Emmanuel Owusu Gyamerah has urged facility owners to not hesitate to involve Ghana’s rent regulators in their initial tenancy agreements with clients, in order to forestall future disputes.

The expressive rent administrator enlightened listeners on the convenient ways to conduct tenancy arrangements without conflict on Plan B FM’s morning show, Nkɔsoɔ Nsɛm, with host Maxwell Ohene Addo aka Nkɔsoɔhene. He said; “people should be happy to involve the rent control office from the start. Because so many landlords are eager to get quick profit they abandon the due process”.

Mr. Gyamerah counselled tenants and landlords to be cognitive of the rules of engagement while observing the dos and don’ts of Ghana’s tenancy statutes, in order to keep all parties satisfied.

In further addressing the issue of avoidable rent-related litigations, Mr. Gyamerah questioned the practice where facility owners demand rent advance payments of two years and beyond, making it challenging for low-income earners to afford accommodation in some cases.   “One of our biggest challenges is the strict demands of advance rents by some facility owners. The law demands payment of rent advances to be limited to at most three months and not the usual thing we see today, he lamented.
