The National Tenants Union of Ghana (NATUG) has sent its strongest caution to Members of Parliament regarding the Rent Bill before the 8th Parliament.
Secretary General of the Tenants Association, Mr Frederick Opoku says his outfit will vote out any Member of Parliament that stands against the passage of the Rent Bill before the August House.
“We’re going to cause our members to vote out MPs who refuse to sign the bill before the 8th Parliament is dissolved in December 2024. Look at the speed and urgency they used in passing the Anti-LGBT Bill, we want the same attention to be given to our Rent bill as well. It is also equally important. These are bread and butter issues and it must be taken seriously. It’s sad to see citizens who voted for these MPs cannot pay their rents” he told Ohene Kinnah on Plan B FM’s ‘Ebaanosen’
The Rent Bill, approved by cabinet in November 2022 and laid before Parliament in March 2023, aims to limit rent advance payments to a maximum of 1 year.
NATUG is urging Parliament to pass the bill into law before dissolution, bringing relief to tenants.
The union has also called on constituents in all 276 constituencies to petition their Members of Parliament to prioritise the passage of the Rent Bill, considering it a social contract upon which their mandate will be renewed on December 7, 2024.
