A courageous move by the management of the Ghana Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), to mandatorily test all staff, might have saved many more from contracting the novel corona virus disease, according to head of communications and public education department of the institution, James Lartey.
Mr. Lartey claims, the leadership of the FDA was swift in organizing a strictly authorized testing regime for all staff after their first reported case of COVID-19 – a staff in Tema on June 14th – was recorded.
Following a thorough and robust contact tracing exercise, an additional case of COVID-19 was confirmed at one of the FDA’s offices in Accra, which prompted management to push for an immediate and compulsory testing regime for all FDA staff.
According to the spokesperson, 37 additional cases of COVID-19 were recorded after the testing program was completed. Mr. Lartey hailed FDA bosses for driving the in-house testing process saying, “some people were reluctant to test because some staff felt it was better to not know your status because that information could break you down but management insisted that we all be tested, hence, more cases were quickly discovered”.
The public education officer added that, 38 full recoveries have been recorded with just one member of staff yet to recover from the disease.
