Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has stated that Ghana urgently needs more lawyers to meet the growing demands and to also help sustain the democracy of the country.

He underscored the important roles that lawyers play in the democracy of Ghana including the protection of the fundamental human rights of every citizen through legal representations.

The Speaker said this when the leadership of the Ghana School of Law paid a courtesy call to him on Thursday, May 16.

Addressing the gathering, he said “There is an urgent need for us to produce more lawyers in this country because we all decided and we are all committed to making sure that democracy succeeds in this country. That is the best form of governance that has been developed for humanity.

“It is not a strict jacket system, every society, and every country is permitted to adopt and adapt to suit your situation, your environment, your culture, your tradition and that is the course we have committed ourselves to.”

The Speaker further pushed for more funds to be allocated to the Ghana School of Law to enable it to expand its facilities.

He said “I have had a discussion with the director of the School of Law and I am I will talk to my colleagues in parliament to see how we could support the general legal council and particularly, the Ghana School of Law to expand the infrastructure by making available, in a formula, the common fund or resources to support the construction.”
