A specialist pharmacist from Tema Polyclinic Madam Cynthia Amoah has advised that effective use of drugs can be defined as the use of the right product, in a correct dosage, during an adequate length of time, for a given patient and provided if one has no serious side effects.
Speaking on plan B FM’s family, lifestyle and relationship show NYANSAPO FIE on the “Rational Use of Herbal Medicine” hosted by Nana Asabea Asare, the specialist Pharmacist explained that it is virtually impossible, with such a number of drugs, such a number of clinical situations to prescribe adequately without using references or guidelines.
She said we must use medicines for their intended purpose and should not experiment with medicines on our own and also do not take medicines from other family members but we should use medicines only when strictly necessary.
“Also, do not use them for shorter or longer than prescribed by your doctor, pharmacist, or as stated in the package leaflet” she asserted
She stressed that medicines are being given to the right patient, the right drug, the right time, the right dose, and the right route, all of which are generally regarded as a standard for safe medication practices.
“People can help make their treatment plan as safe and effective as possible by telling the doctor, nurse, or pharmacist,
What medical problems they have, What drugs (prescription and nonprescription) and dietary supplements (including medicinal herbs) they have taken in the previous few weeks”.
She advised that as patient always the expiry date of the drugs, the side effect of the drug you are taking an the duration to take the drug.
