A microbiologist with Medland Hospital in Tema Community 2 Mr. Paul Kwame Owusu has stated that heat and tight underwear are among the causes of candidiasis in females and males.
Giving a health tip on Plan B FM’s Drive time show hosted by Blutut Africa, the microbiologist explained that, candidiasis is an
opportunistic fungal infection caused by the excessive growth of candida albicans (meaning white) that is part of normal flora and can be found in the gastrointestinal tract, throat, mouth, skin, and reproductive organs which can affect both males and females.
He said candidiasis is caused by
Heat, pH changes, bacteria vaginosis, oral contraceptives, and antibiotic usage.
Mr. Kwame Paul stressed that high-risk people are those with diabetes, pregnancies, and those who take emergency contraceptives, antibiotics, steroid intake
immune deficient individuals(HIV, chemotherapy, transplant, surgery )
He explained that experiencing vaginal itching, painful urination and pains during sexual intercourse, redness, swelling, and cracks may be a sign of candidiasis, and also symptoms of mouth candidiasis may include
difficulty swallowing, loss of taste, redness, and cracks in the corners of the mouth.
He said candidates can be prevented through proper hygienic lifestyle, control of blood sugar levels, Wearing loose underwear and clothes, also eating probiotic yogurts and
wipe from front to back after visiting the washroom and also
avoiding antibiotic self-medication
